Craftmanship

Since 1990, Mirjam Dijkman has been working as a Freelance Wardrobe Stylist for Advertising, Film, Theater, Television, Photography, shows and concerts.

"I am a very experienced craftswomen in terms of costume making for both theatre and movies. My greatest strength is creating theater costumes from a drawing (in consultation with the Art Director) and looking for fabrics and accessories myself. I have years of experience in Film and Advertising productions . This can vary from commercials on television and the internet to major TV shows, events , Feature films, Photo shoots , short movies , Concerts , Historical clothing assignments and intricate costume making for multiple purposes."

According to Mirjam, a photo shoot can only reach its full potential when a stylist is allowed to freely choose which accessories and what kind of attributes to use. "For the Dutch brand "Zeker Eten" I did an exclusive series of photo shoots with top photographer Rayzor Sharp . Furthermore, I regularly assist photo shoots for  brands such as  L'oreal , Rituals and Tommy Hilfiger after which the photographs will then be displayed on their websites." Mirjam has been involved with MS mode for a while. During this time, she upgraded the brand's photo shoots and uplifted the its image from 'fancy' to a strong fashion brand for mostly plus-sized women.

With a background in fashion and solid knowledge of fabrics, garments and the ways these should be sewn,  she is able to eliminate the bottlenecks  in design processes and prevent mistakes.

Work Mentality

"Organizational , stress resistant , flexible , clear thinking and the ability to quickly switch if deadlines require this. My empathic abilities allow me to quickly understand the wishes of customers and clients." During fashion shoots, there is often not a lot of time to think things through and you need to act quickly. Throughout the years this helped Mirjam to become more solution-oriented and quickly understand the situation has become one of her strongest traits.

Mirjam has great affinity with historical costumes and aims to combine these with contemporary fashion to create a beautiful picture for the styling assignment. Because of her fashion education and background in tailoring and sewing, she understands how ( theater ) costumes should be put together and devise solutions on the spot .

"Mixing designer clothes with vintage , restyle with fabrics and accessories to create a complete picture is in my opinion crucial to deliver a  beautiful and inspiring end result."

Clothing

Mirjam's strength lies in redesigning existing pieces of clothing and turn these into complete new fashion items. "Vintage clothing that does not fit well can easily be transformed in new, well fitting designs that better fit the model. Because of my passion for beautiful and authentic fabrics I believe it would be a shame to throw things away."

Mirjam is currently working on the launch of her own silk clothing line called SILK IN STYLE. In addition, she tries to volunteer as much as possible in her free time for organizations such as Catwalk for Cancer to use her craft-ship skills for better purposes.

"Together with my daughter I volunteered for Projects Abroad at an orphanage in Kenya Nakuru. Here, we supported the staff and helped them starting up a small sewing workshop in the orphanage. We taught the women about electric sewing machines instead of pedal machines and helped them in making new school costumes and petticoats for the children at the orphanage." The last volunteering project Mirjam participated in was teaching foreign women with little knowledge of sewing how to design and create their own clothing. Unfortunately, helping these women was not possible anymore when the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Interior

Mirjam regularly engages in decorative assignments for fashion brand Tommy Hilfiger. This includes the creation of in-store wall decorations and upholstering showroom attributes such as cushions on behalf of The Set Company. The Set Company is a Dutch based interior and design company that enlist my help in case of assignments that require the smart use of fabrics. For Tommy Hilfiger, she composed large wall hangings and carpets made from old jeans . Furthermore, she designed Indian tents for their showrooms of cloth and leather and decorated their ceiling with astronaut costumes.

"My frequent collaboration with The Set Company has allowed me to improve my upholstering skills and finish off leather furniture leather with decorative stitching." In order to do this, Mirjam uses her personally owned, professional industry sewing and leather machines. Consequently, The Set Company also reached out to her when they received a big order for Marcel Wanders. "For this assignment I had to make twelve big unicorns, fully upholstery and with decorative stitching."

An overview of Mirjam's clients and a small impression of the work she does next to her styling assignments can be viewed in her portfolio.
